Kybella Before and After: How Many Sessions You Really Need for a Double Chin

Injector in blue gloves giving a Kybella injection under the chin to reduce a double chin, Kybella treatment in Forest Hills, NY.

Okay, so picture this. You eat decently, you drag yourself to the gym, and yet your cousin posts a group photo from the side and there it is again, that soft little pouch under the chin that apparently didn’t get the memo about your new routine. Half the time it’s just genetics (thanks, family tree) and no number of planks is going to touch it.

Kybella is the one injectable the FDA has approved for getting rid of fat cells under the chin. Scroll around for Kybella before and after pictures though and you’ll notice something odd, which is that nobody ever says how many visits it took or how puffy they were the week after each one. We figured we’d just tell you, since it’s a lot less nerve-wracking when you know what’s coming.

The cheat sheet, before the long version:

  • what’s in the vial is deoxycholic acid
  • two to four sessions is typical for most of our people, six is the max the label allows
  • sessions are spaced at least a month apart
  • swelling for several days after each visit is the main thing to plan around
  • the final result usually shows about four to six weeks after your last treatment

How Does Kybella Work?

Technically it’s a deoxycholic acid injection. Your gut makes deoxycholic acid every day to deal with the fat in your lunch, so it isn’t some exotic chemical. Put it right into the fat under your chin and it pops the walls of those fat cells, and then your body sort of tidies up the mess by itself over the following weeks.

Dieting just shrinks fat cells, which is why they can puff right back up later. Kybella actually gets rid of them, and gone is gone. It got FDA approval in 2015 for moderate to severe fullness under the chin, and among all the things people lump together as fat dissolving injections it’s still the only approved one, so pretty much any real study you find on fat dissolving injections chin results is talking about this exact product.

Kybella Before and After, Visit by Visit

This is roughly how our clients describe it as the course goes on, although everybody moves at their own pace:

  • After session one there’s usually a small difference that you mostly notice in profile, and a lot of people feel a bit let down at this point, which is completely normal and doesn’t mean it isn’t working.
  • After session two the chin and the neck start to separate more clearly, and friends may say you look slimmer without being able to put their finger on why.
  • After session three or four you tend to see a defined angle between the jaw and the neck and a cleaner side profile in photos.

Kybella double chin results tend to be best in people with a moderate amount of fat and skin that still has decent elasticity. If the skin is already quite loose, taking the fat out alone can leave some laxity behind, and in that case we’ll probably talk to you about adding a tightening treatment as well.

“The first session is mostly about getting things moving. We always tell people to judge Kybella by the side photo six weeks after their last visit, and not by the mirror a week after their first.”

What Happens at the Appointment

If you’ve never had anything injected before, it helps a lot to know how the visit goes, and honestly it’s quicker than most people expect, usually somewhere around 30 to 45 minutes from start to finish. We start by taking standardized profile photos so we have something reliable to compare against later, since phone selfies in different bathroom lighting will mess with your head. Then we draw a small grid on the skin under your chin, which keeps the product evenly spread and away from the nerve that runs along the jawline. Ice or a numbing cream goes on next, then a series of small injections with a very fine needle that only takes a few minutes, and you rest with a cold pack for a little while before heading home.

The appointment itself is the easy part, really, and what you’ll want to plan your week around is the swelling that comes after.

How Many Kybella Sessions Do I Need?

It’s the question we hear more than any other, and for most people the answer is two to four. According to the official prescribing information, up to six treatments can be given, spaced no less than one month apart. How many Kybella treatments you’ll personally need depends on how much fat is there to begin with, how firm your skin is (firmer skin settles around the new contour more nicely), how quickly your own body clears the treated fat, and whether you’re after a subtle tweak or a big change in your profile.

At the consultation we do a pinch test, look at the skin quality and check for neck bands, and that’s usually enough for us to tell you whether this is the right treatment for you and roughly how many visits to budget for.

Kybella Swelling Stages, Day by Day

Swelling is the part nobody includes in their before and after posts, and while it’s temporary it’s very real, so it’s better to go in with your eyes open. These are the Kybella swelling stages most people go through.

Days 1 to 3: Peak Swelling

The area under the chin is swollen, tender and sometimes a little numb, and more than a few clients have joked about looking like a bullfrog for a couple of days. Bruising is common too, and in the clinical trials about 72% of people had some bruising where they were injected, so cold compresses are your friend here.

Days 4 to 7: Things Calm Down

The Kybella swelling starts going down noticeably, and most people feel fine being out in public by now, especially with a scarf or a higher collar if it’s sweater weather anyway.

Weeks 2 to 4: Firmness Fades

Some people find little firm lumps or a patch that still feels a bit numb when they touch it. Annoying, sure, but it’s just the tissue healing and it fades without you having to do anything.

Weeks 4 to 6: Results Show Up

Once the swelling has completely settled you can actually see what that session did, and this is also when we’d book your next one if you need it. That’s pretty much the Kybella results timeline in a nutshell, slow and stepwise, with the biggest change coming at the end of the full course.

A few Kybella aftercare habits make the recovery a lot easier, like sleeping with your head propped up for the first couple of nights, using cold compresses for ten to fifteen minutes at a time, and skipping hard workouts, saunas and alcohol for a day or two. We’d also suggest not scheduling anything important, like a wedding or a big presentation, for at least two weeks after a session.

Physically, Kybella recovery is easy, and the Kybella downtime is mostly a social thing, since you can usually work, drive and get on with your day, you just may not be in the mood to be on camera for a few days.

Kybella Side Effects: Normal vs. Worth a Call

The normal, expected stuff is swelling, bruising, tenderness, numbness, redness and some hardness under the skin, and almost everyone gets a bit of that.

Less common but worth a phone call to us straight away would be an uneven smile (which comes from temporary irritation of a nerve near the jaw), any trouble swallowing, or open sores where you were injected. These Kybella side effects are rare and usually resolve, but they should always be looked at by your provider rather than waited out.

Is Kybella Permanent?

In the sense that destroyed fat cells don’t come back, yes. Does it mean the result is locked in forever no matter what? Not quite, because if you gain a significant amount of weight later on the fat cells that are left in that area can still get bigger, so keeping your weight fairly stable is the best way to protect what you paid for.

How Much Is Kybella?

There are two things that drive Kybella cost: vials per visit and the number of visits. That’s why the per-vial price you find online doesn’t tell you much on its own. One person’s chin takes a vial or two, someone else’s takes a good few more, and it really just depends on the chin.

So when people ask us how much is Kybella, or try to compare the Kybella price and double chin injections cost between different clinics, we always suggest comparing the price of the whole course rather than a single appointment. You’ll get a personal estimate from us at your consultation, so there aren’t any surprises halfway through.

Other Ways to Get Rid of a Double Chin

If you’re wondering how to get rid of double chin fullness for good, Kybella isn’t the only route, and here’s roughly how the main options stack up against each other:

KybellaCoolSculptingLiposuction
MethodInjectionsControlled coolingSurgery
Sessions2 to 4, up to 61 to 31
DowntimeSwelling for several daysMinimal1 to 2 weeks
Best forSmall to moderate fullnessModerate, pinchable fatLarger volumes

On Kybella vs CoolSculpting, we find the needle gets into a small spot like the under-chin more precisely than a cooling applicator does. Kybella vs liposuction is more of a gut check about whether you want surgery at all. Most of the folks who come to us want double chin removal without surgery, period, so that’s where double chin injections make the most sense. If you’re curious about other areas of the body, we have a separate guide on body contouring.

Is Kybella Right for You?

Moderate fullness, skin that still snaps back when you pinch it, a weight that’s been pretty steady lately? Then you’re probably a good fit. Now, if your real complaint is jawline definition and not fat, we’d likely steer you elsewhere, and the piece we wrote on chin Botox and jawline filler walks through those options. For vertical neck bands, the Nefertiti Lift may be worth a look too.

Things People Ask Us

What about jowls or the jawline?

The approval is for under-the-chin fat only. Kybella jowls requests, or Kybella for jawline sculpting, would be off-label, and we'd only even consider it in a few hand-picked cases after seeing you in person.

When does the first session start to show?

Give it four to six weeks, until the puffiness is totally gone. Even then, the big reveal is really at the end of the whole course, not after round one.

How long does the swelling last?

The really noticeable part lasts about three to five days, and a bit of mild firmness can stick around for a few weeks after that.

Can I go back to work the next day?

Most people do, as long as they don't mind a bit of visible swelling for a few days.

Does Kybella work for everyone?

It works well for the right candidate, meaning someone with pinchable fat under the chin and decent skin tone, but it won't fix loose skin or a weak chin bone on its own, which is why we assess you first.

Is it painful?

Expect a burning or stinging feeling for ten to twenty minutes after the injections, and we use cooling and numbing to keep it as comfortable as we can.

The Bottom Line

Kybella works, but it rewards people who are patient with it, so plan for a course of treatments, give every session time to settle and judge your Kybella results by the final profile shot rather than how you look in the first week. A lot of our clients found us while looking up Kybella NYC options or just typing “Kybella near me,” and as a local Forest Hills practice we see plenty of people from all over Queens who’d rather get experienced care close to home than trek into Manhattan for it, which is a big part of why Kybella Queens searches so often lead to our door.

Wondering how many sessions your own chin would need? The quickest way to find out is a short assessment for Kybella in Forest Hills, where we’ll take a profile photo, do a quick pinch test and give you an honest number of sessions, along with an estimate for the whole course rather than just one visit.
